Oscar de la Renta Resort 2013

22 May

IMG_2051

One of the 8million reasons I love Oscar de la Renta’s shows–they keep me on my toes during the “off-season” from fashion week. Things seem quiet, and them bam! Time for another Oscar show.

Yesterday’s Resort show showcased what I would now say is currently my favorite OdlR collection. Yes, I say that about every collection, but that’s the point! After years of designing, the man understands the true meaning of perfection. And when you can create something new and inspiring, and re-invent yourself 5+ times a year, you are in my opinion, a true design genius.

I always know when I truly love a collection when it decimates my vocabulary skills. Suddenly, I forget all adjectives but gorgeous/beautiful/pretty/amazing and start repeating myself like some sort of fashion-crazed parrot, who has just learned to speak.

But truly, the show *was* beautiful as always. I — along with a handful of other photographers once again “live Pinned” the before, during, and after show happenings on Pinterest. You can see the results here. Below, some of my favorite images, along with a few exclusives that weren’t on Pinterest. ;)

Oscar de la Renta Bridal 2013

Oscar de la Renta Bridal 2013 30

Yesterday, instead of  dreading another manic Monday, I spent my morning deeply submerged in the world of Oscar de la Renta Bridal.

Oscar de la Renta Bridal 2013 61

This was my very first Bridal show, which I can say was even more magical than a “regular” fashion show. I was one of three photographers given a unprecendented 3+ hours of show access, chosen to “Live Pin” the show on Pinterest. The project totally blew up on twitter, and has resulted in some pretty crazy press.

Everything about the show was beautiful. From the so gorgeous you could cry dresses, to the flowers– and little flower girls– even the always on point musical choices. I’ve long felt that Oscar can do no wrong, but seeing all the lacy, delicate and intricately detailed bridal gowns up close and personal just proved to me what a mastery the man has of his craft. Some of my other favorite designers still have occasional seasons of “misses”. But never, ever Oscar.

Oscar de la Renta Bridal 2013 06

I absolutely love love loved that “something blue” was incorporated into the show. As one Pinterest commenter mentioned, a handful of the looks were very “Spanish Royalty”, which Oscar being Oscar, is oh so fitting.

Oscar de la Renta Bridal 2013 12

Oscar de la Renta Bridal 2013 14

Maybe it’s just my photojournalism education making me want to “keep it real”, but as usual, I’ve just done a subtle brightening of colors. A fashion show isn’t exactly the place to go mad abusing photoshop actions on your photos. And really, everything was already so exquisite, why mess with perfection?

Below, more of my favorites from the Pinterest board, with a few never before seen shots thrown in for good measure.

Getting in the Spirit of Fashion Week

7 Feb

Things have been quite around here, while I’ve been doing a lot of planning and preparation for NY Fashion Week. A lot of last minute friend hangouts, schedule wrangling– and a lot of laundry!

As is tradition, I like to start off each new fashion week revisiting some of my favorite photos from the season before. Hopefully, I will have a lot more great coverage from my 6th (!!) season at NYFW. For anyone new here: I shoot such a high volume (at least 30 shows, averaging about 16-20,000 photos overall–all while pulling 12 hour days for about 9 days straight) that I post “teaser” images every night. Full show and backstage coverage will begin the day after NYFW ends.

Katie Gallagher creates collections that completely embody a theme with more skill than any other young designer I have ever encountered. With a talent, vision, and work ethic that defies her years, Katie’s collections are a consistent favorite, season after season.

IMG_4237

For Spring, Katie was inspired by blood. “Not the blood of nightmares of brutality, but the blood that’s sanguine, living and the brightest red. Always moving, coursing, and restless inside us. All the while staying hidden to the outside world.”

IMG_4244

IMG_4248

Every last detail of her show is executed to perfection. Hair and makeup looks are just inspired as Katie’s designs, this season drawing inspiration from the bloodstream (makeup) and the heart (hair). Even the set design (vials of blood) and hand-picked show music complements the designs.

Makeup artist Javier Romero “imagined dipping the model’s face inside a blood vessel”, and created his own mascara to capture the precise look.

Photobucket

Romero first applied MAC Mineralize Charged Water Moisturizer, followed by Matchmaster SPF15 Foundation to even out skin. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Foundation was dusted over the T-zone. For eyes, MAC Chromographic Pencil in Pro Basic Red was used around the upper lash line. MAC Pro Lash, MAC Mixing Medium, and Mac Pigment in Pro Basic Red were mixed together to create red mascara. Next, MAC 30 Lash was applied to upper lashes, and eyelids were glossed with MAC Pro Gloss Texture.

For lips, Romero started with MAC Chromographic Pencil in Pro Basic Red, then blended MAC Pro Longwear Lipcolor in Lasting Lust. Finishing with MAC Pro Longwear Clear Gloss.

Hair stylist Cesar Ramirez was also inspired by the blood concept, leading him to create a look inspired by the heart, and the movement of blood vessels.

Rachel Antonoff’s whimsical, girlie creations frequently draw their inspiration from childhood situations. Spring 2012 was no different, and based on a “haunted house” theme, artfully brought to life out using a set made of adorable illustrations by Alia Penner.

Editorial Outtakes: Preetma

Preetma2

While browsing files on my external hard drive last week, I came across these shots of Preetma Singh, from a Spring editorial I shot for a client– that was never published. They’re too beautiful not to share with the rest of the world, so I’m posting some of the outtakes here.

Preetma4
The shoot (about a girl getting ready for a night on the town) took place in the Warren Tricomi salon, on Manhattan’s UES.

Preetma3
One of my favorite shots. I love this multi-watch look!

Not only is Preetma beautiful, but she’s also amazingly intelligent, and kind!
An attorney who now works at VOGUE, you can catch her inspiring outfit posts, and life adventures on her blog Working Girl, Esq. Seriously–her blog is one of the few style blogs I still read on a regular basis. She’s right up there with Susie Bubble on my list of style bloggers who actually stimulate my creativity and make me want to dress better, and is one of my favorite street style subjects to capture at NYFW.

Fashion’s Night Out With Oscar de la Renta

8 Sep

Oscar de la Renta FNO: 21

When rumors of this year’s FNO events started swirling around, I wondered, what could I possibly do that would top spending the past two years of FNO with Gwen Stefani. Well tonight, I got my answer!

Thanks to the amazing ladies of Oscar de la Renta’s PR department, I got to spend Fashion’s Night Out watching Oscar himself, and a mariachi band sing to the crowd in his Madison Avenue boutique. The store was packed full of friends and admirers, but everyone was so happy and excited, it wasn’t as overwhelming as some FNO events can be.

Everyone was laughing, and cheering, and having fun. At one point, the crowd went wild. Assuming everyone was really excited for Oscar to begin singing again, I was shocked to look up and see Sarah Jessica Parker had made her way to the stage to be serenaded by Oscar.

After a few songs, both Sarah Jessica, and Oscar made lovely speeches, gushing over how much they admire each other. It was adorable, and almost made me a little teary eyed. When SJP was on her way out, I got to tell her the effect her speech had on me as she passed by, which she said was sweet.

Whatever these are, they were made with some of the best chocolate I’ve ever had in my life. And I don’t really even like chocolate!

Soon it was time for me to head home. I couldn’t believe it was just after 8pm– It’s been such a long day, it felt more like midnight. But it’s safe to say my FNO adventure might have been short, but it was definitely sweet. Like the past two years of FNO, I’ll be sure to remember tonight forever.

See more photos from FNO at Oscar de la Renta here.
