Magazine Internships

I get asked a lot how I broke in to working in magazines. The obvious answer is INTERNSHIPS!

I interned in the photo department at Maxim Magazine in Fall 2006, and after one semester was able to get hired freelance at other magazines like Country Living, More, Page Six Magazine, and Cosmopolitan. I’ve been on countless photo shoots, met celebrities, and have had my own work published!

The best advice I can give anyone wanting to work in this industry is to intern. And do it early, and often. I have friends who started interning at 17, and now have more experience than some 25 years olds working in the same departments. If you’re still in school, try to intern at least twice before you graduate. You can never have too much experience!!

Here is a round up of some of the best Photo, Fashion, and Design/Production Fall Semester internships just waiting to be filled! All listings via the best internship site out there– Ed2010.com!

  1. Hi!

I just stumbled upon the post using the tag surfer… may I ask how you started out, were you in school? I find myself at a bit of a disadvantage, first of all I live in Vancouver, away from these great opportunities and I’m not enrolled in any school that’s related. I got my university degree in Communications and now work in marketing & graphic design. Is it a lost cause for me?

Look forward to any insight, thanks!

    • I went to school for photojournalism. Everything was geared towards newspapers when I graduated, but I knew since I was a girl I wanted to work in magazines. I just took the initiative and applied for every photo internship I could find. As long as you have a background in the area you are applying in (writing/graphic design/photo/fashion/etc…) you should be OK whether you went to school for it or not. Its much easier to intern while you’re still enrolled in school though. And interning is definitely a big stepping stone to breaking into the business if you want to work in publishing.

  2. I have a personal passion for fashion and magazines but not much direct and professional experience in it. I’m willing to move and even go back to school as crazy as it sounds to find work I’ll love.
Anyway, great blog and photography, and thanks for your advice!
