Katie Gallagher is a designer who I’ve followed since nearly the beginning of her career. Season after season, she impresses me with her continual growth as a designer and artist. Few other young designers in NYC so accurately conceptualize and transition a theme or idea into a clothing collection.
For Fall 2014, Katie’s collection Wonderland was inspired by abandoned amusement parks. The idea of “childlike details” and decay transitioned into details like giant hair bows worn by models, and worn in details of the clothing.
Her shows also feature one of the most symbiotic relationships between a collection’s theme or inspiration, the actual clothes, and the beauty looks worn by models. A process aided by working year after year with such strong creative team, consisting of MAC Director of Makeup Artistry Romero Jennings, and Catwalk by TIGI’s Global Creative Director Nick Irwin.
This season, Nick Irwin developed a look that “juxtaposed sleep transition into natural texture.”
To get the look:
Hair was parted in the center, then prepped with a mist of water and combed through. Next, Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Strong Hold Mousse was used to smooth down hair at the root. Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Wet-Look Gel was painted on from the hairline to the nape. (Hair below was left dry). Hair was finished with Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Work It Hairspray to clean up flyaways.
MAC’s Romero Jennings further develed into the themes of abandoned structures and decay, creating a look that featured a vampy, dark lip.
“The inspiration for the show is about an abandoned amusement park. So think about old metal that has sort of rusted and is chipping away. If you look at Katie’s collection the clothing almost mimics armor even though its feminine, with a little bit of dark edge. I decided to keep the skin glowing by highlighting it, also doing this vampy almost a film-noir lip. Brushed up brows to look sort of wild, almost Game of Thrones-esque, with a masculine brow. No contouring but highlighting brow and this really powerful lip. The lip color is Currant lip pencil, filled in with lipstick Heart of Flame with Crushed Cranberry also.”
