Backstage at the S/S 2015 Marc by Marc Jacobs show, it seemed as if I was transported back to my high school years in the late 1990’s. With makeup inspired by (the original 1980’s) English Rave scene, and hair by 90’s era Bjork, it’s no wonder why!
Redken’s Guido chose Bjorks’s signature hair knots, redone in a mohawk type style, to transform the models into “tough girls” for the show.
Redken’s Wind Blown 05 was used to add texture to hair. Next, said Guido “I started by taking the hair into four horizontal sections and bringing them into little ponytails at the top of the crown, twisting them down, leaving some ends out and then pinning them with fine pins. Nothing is perfect. The part isn’t perfect, so you get kind of a punky feeling.”
Karen Walker’s show is always one of the most fun and upbeat shows of every NY Fashion Week. Backstage, the atmosphere is no different: models are happy, smiling, and enjoying themselves, posing in the gorgeous clothes, and absolutely amazing sunglasses Karen comes up with, season after season.
Sadly, this season I overbooked myself (a lot!), and Monday, the day of Karen’s show, I ended up in a bit of a time crunch. But I still managed to spend some time backstage, photographing the equally fun makeup, and tousled, beachy hair.
The atmosphere backstage at Betsey Johnson is always more like a party than the hectic pre-show environment of most fashion shows. It’s the one show where models and press actually sip champagne, and munch on mini cupcakes, just like I always imagined fashion shows to be when I was growing up.
Another thing the show had in common with my childhood– crimped hair! Betsey herself served as the inspiration for the wild, chunky crimped look, created by AVEDA lead hair stylist John Reyman.
Last week, I spent some time at my parent’s house in Northwest Indiana. I wanted to enjoy the last few days of Lake Michigan beach weather, and check out some thrift stores (which were much cheaper than their nyc counterparts). I ended up totally hitting the jackpot, and found a huge bag full of amazing stuff! So much I had to pack another suitcase on my way home. Almost everything is sequined, and sparkly, and very 80’s.
Some of the best stuff I got:
Michael Jackson meets The Golden Girls:
And there’s a lot more to come!
I’ve been so busy finalizing everything I need to get done before fashion week, unpacking, and visiting friends that I haven’t had time to list anything yet. But some of this will most likely end up on my etsy, or ebay in the next week or two. So keep an eye out! Also, soon I should have some (hopefully) very good news about special fashion week happenings, a blogging collaboration, and a LOT of photos to share!
