THOM BROWNE S/S 2017

THOM BROWNE SPRING-SUMMER 2017 022 Thom Browne’s shows never cease to blow my mind. Season after season, they just keep getting better, more theatrical, and even more innovative than ever. The gorgeous clothing is so consistently fabulous, so photogenic, that I feel privileged seeing its runway debut, and end up still thinking about it years later.

For Spring, the show took place in a colorful tiled set, which led VOGUE to liken it to a ‘Stepford Wives’ pool party’. A description I found quite accurate.  Upon entering the venue, photographers were given white Thom Browne lab coat-style jackets to wear, to further the immaculate illusion.

Backstage, the beauty look focused on big bombshell hair, “fake” tans, and multi-colored pastel lips and nails.

THOM BROWNE SPRING-SUMMER 2017 006

Sil Bruinsma for MAC used MAC’s Pro Longwear Foundation in NC42 to create the orange, fake tan look on models faces. Models got pastel blue, or green lips, depending on skin tone. Liberal layers of mascara were applied to lashes to create a smudged look. With the makeup being finished off with a line of white acrylic paint looping around models’ necks to show a clear line between their fake tanned faces, and untanned bodies.

THOM BROWNE SPRING-SUMMER 2017 002

Bumble and Bumble’s Jimmy Paul created a voluminous retro influenced hairdo to complement the collections old school pool party vibe. (After the hair was curled and set, large floral swim caps were placed on model’s heads until the show.)

TO GET THE LOOK: 1. Apply bumble and bumble Prep. Spray thickening hairspray and Surf spray throughout. 2. Pin into a curling iron set. 3. Once hair is set, let down and brush out curls. 4. Backcomb hair to add volume and lift at the roots. 5. Keep the look in place with Strong Finish. – Via Bumble and Bumble.

JEREMY SCOTT F/W 2016: BACKSTAGE

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 037

Backstage at Jeremy Scott — one of the most fun– and happy shows of fashion week, the mood was pure excitement. With as much careful consideration given to the beauty looks as the clothes, the big hair and bright makeup I found was definitely not disappointing. Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director Wella Professionals, created an over the top, “slightly Barbarella” inspired big hair look.

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 015

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 017

To get the look: “Eugene started by prepping the hair using EIMI Sugar Lift with EIMI Perfect Setting on the ends. Over-applying the product gave the hair a chemically processed texture, making it easier to style and giving it the fifties look that is synonymous with classic pin-up style. On creating the look, Eugene shares: ‘We blew the hair out at the roots with EIMI Sugar Lift to give us a great base for the backcombing. It makes the hair feel a little bit more porous and processed which is wonderful for keeping volume.'”

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 009

“Once the hair was dried using a large round brush, it was left to set in wide rollers before being brushed out.”

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 024 “Eugene applied EIMI Stay Essential hairspray to hold the style and teased the hair to make it even bigger. At the end of the day, perfect pin-up hair was the finishing touch that brought together the Barbie-esque, decades-inspired ‘Cowboys and Poodles’ runway look.” -Instructions via WELLA Professionals

MAC Cosmetic’s Key Makeup Artist, Kabuki (one of my favorite makeup geniuses of NYFW!) created a “Cowgirls in Space” pin up inspired look to compliment the funky collection. “I wanted the look to feel fresh, and very Jeremy Scott”. Bright pink lips were the focal point of the look, with a swipe of custom mixed electric blue eyeliner to enhance the eye.

“To complement Jeremy Scott’s Spring 2016 collection, Miss Pop used a line up of our five best bright lacquer shades. She painted elongated oval nail tips in each of the five shades, then added a cartoon-like flare on the pinkies in Alpine Snow to give the nails a shiny plastic look.” – Via OPI

Colors used include: Shorts Story, A Good Mandarin is Hard to Find, The Sun Never Sets, I just can’t Cope-Acabana, and To Infinity and Blue-yond. “One coat of one of each of those shades and then one coat of Kyoto pearl to get this muted metallic bright.” – Via Miss Pop

JEREMY SCOTT SPRING/SUMMER 2016: BACKSTAGE

Untitled

Backstage at a Jeremy Scott show is usually one of the most colorful, fun, and lively environments one can possibly encounter during New York Fashion Week.

I always enjoy shows with more theatrical themes, that carry over not just in the collection, but to the beauty looks, and production as well. So this show was my own idea of thematic heaven! For Spring/Summer 2016, Jeremy Scott was inspired by John Waters, specifically the movie crybaby. If you haven’t ever seen it–please watch it asap and prepare to be inspired by the amazing beauty and fashion, and maybe fall in love with Johnny Depp a little bit.

To achieve that “Crybaby” look, big, bold hair is essential. WELLA’s Eugene Souleiman delivered, in the form of giant wigs, teased and backcombed to achieve the highest volume possible, then curled.

The Blonds S/S 2012

The Blonds S-S 2012 139

I found it very fitting that one of the most theatrical and entertaining shows of NY Fashion Week took place on the last (for me) day. The Blonds’ shows are always a sight to see, as much a true spectacle as one can find during fashion week.

This season, I not only photographed the runway show, but ventured backstage as well. There, I found hair and nails just as show-stopping as the clothes.

The Blonds S-S 2012 59

CND nail tech Kristina Eastabrooks created a 20 sets of glamorous, sparkling nail tips for the show– that took over 100 hours to complete! The details on the nails, which featured materials like crushed geometric glass, 24k gold leafing, Swarovski crystals, and hand painted designs, were truly amazing:

Dennis Lanni for Bumble and Bumble created “Jessica Rabbit”, curvy big hair that corresponded with the show’s classic 60’s heyday Playboy theme.

The Blonds S-S 2012 67

Dennis himself is a huge fan of 60’s era beauty, and it’s “big healthy hair”, but also insured the look didn’t veer too far into “pageant hair” territory.

To get the look:

Hair was sprayed down with Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray. A large barrel curling iron was then used to curl hair, which was then pinned on the top of the head to set.

The Blonds S-S 2012 14

Once pins are removed, hair was back-combed with a fine bristled (not nylon!) brush. Hair was finished with Spray de Mode for hold.

Oscar de la Renta S/S 2012

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012-150

Some seasons, fashion week gets so intense that 20,000+ photos later (yes, you read that right), you don’t even know where to start. Which, along with an untimely hard drive crash, is how it came to be that my Oscar de la Renta show coverage is posting a bit…late.

Despite the months passing, I’m just as obsessed with this collection as ever. Take a look, and find out why:

Badgley Mischka S/S 2012: Backstage

Badgley Mischka Spring 2012-34

Backstage at Badgley Mischka’s Spring 2012 show, the word of the day was “glamour”.

Nail guru Deborah Lippmann created a brand new color to compliment the drama of the show’s hair and makeup looks, and celebrate the “power of dressing up”.

Inspired by the rose gold Rolex watch, the color, The Glamourous Life (which took over 3 years to develop!) was painted onto short, rounded nails and on toenails; leaving them neat in appearance, and satiny–but not frosty– in finish.

Faces were first prepped with Rodin’s Olio Lusso. Next, Pecheux used Mineralized Charged Water Moisture Gel to hydrate, followed by MAC Sculpt Foundation for coverage. On eyes, Metal-X Cream Shadow in Palladium was applied below the brow, with Metal-X Cream Shadow in Vintage Coin on lids. Mac Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Forever Green was used to created the winged-out cat eye look. MAC Haught and Naughty Lash Mascara topped off the dramatic eye. Finally, MAC lustre Lipstick in Flamingo was applied to lips.
