TANYA TAYLOR FALL/WINTER 2015

TANYA TAYLOR Fall-Winter 2015 057

Tanya Taylor is the creator of some of my favorite prints and textures shown at NYFW. They are always ladylike, yet never boring. And each season I find myself wishing I could buy the majority of what she sends down the runway. I’m a big fan of dresses, and her dresses– well, they impress.

Along with creating great fabrics, Tanya also designs some wonderful complimentary accessories. Frequently including things such as bags, belts, and hair embellishments.

HONOR FALL/WINTER 2015

HONOR Fall-Winter 2015 025

Since their NYFW debut 5 years ago, HONOR has become one of the most reliable brands around for gorgeous, whimsical womenswear. For Fall 2015, designer Giovanna Randall was inspired by the forest, a theme which presented itself in both the collection, and the show’s set design. Both of which completely blew me away.

Backstage, the inspiration was classic Catherine Deneuve, with 70’s inspired hair, and girlish headbands featured on models.

KAREN WALKER F/W 2013: BACKSTAGE

Karen Walker F-W 2013-019

Karen Walker’s show is always one of the most fun and upbeat shows of every NY Fashion Week. Backstage, the atmosphere is no different: models are happy, smiling, and enjoying themselves, posing in the gorgeous clothes, and absolutely amazing sunglasses Karen comes up with, season after season.

Sadly, this season I overbooked myself (a lot!), and Monday, the day of Karen’s show, I ended up in a bit of a time crunch. But I still managed to spend some time backstage, photographing the equally fun makeup, and tousled, beachy hair.

KAREN WALKER S/S 2013: BACKSTAGE

KAREN WALKER S-S 2013 40

Karen Walker’s Spring 2013 collection was inspired by space. Yet the somewhat futuristic inspiration was toned down with a dash of 1950’s nostalgia, and whimsical sherbert hues.

CND’s Angi Wingle took the season’s creative direction quite literally, creating a white “milky way” manicure inspired by “looking skyward”. Nails were painted with 2 coats of “Studio White”, and finished with 1 coat of “Super Matte Top Coat”.

Longtime Karen Walker collaborator Laurent Philippon, for Bumble and Bumble created an edgier, tougher look for spring. Hair was lightly tousled, and featured bangs that covered models’ eyes.

To get the look: Hair was saturated with Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, then dried. Three loose braids were woven into hair.

KAREN WALKER S-S 2013 03

The braids were then flat ironed, then undone to create a slight wave. Extensions were glued in, then trimmed to create the shaggy bang fringe.

Extensions were matched to models’ natural hair color. Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder was used to help blend the hair colors.

Clinique Global Colour Artist Jenna Menard took the 1950’s optimism, and space age theme of the show and translated it into a “moon kissed” makeup look. Lips were bright with a dash of iridescence, and skin was porcelain.

To get the look:
Skin was perfected with Clinique Even Better Broad Spectrum SPF15 Foundation, and set with Sheer Stay Matte powder. Long Last Lipstick in Watermelon was applied in multiple layers along with Colour Surge Eye Shadow Duo in Seashell Pink/Fawn Satin and Pink Slate to achieve the bright pink pout. Quickliner For Eyes Intense, in Intense Ebony was used to line eyes. The look was finished with High Impact Extreme Waterproof Mascara in Black, and Bottomlash Mascara in Black.

TANYA TAYLOR S/S 2013

TANYA TAYLOR S-S 2013 031

Tanya Taylor is a relatively new (and new to me!) designer on the NYFW scene. Gathering a fair amount of buzz after just one season, Taylor’s second collection showcased her love of prints, and an updated, quirky vision of ladylike style.

Backstage, international lead makeup artist Uzo, for NARS created a summery 1960’s inspired look that channeled actress Natalie Wood.

ESSIE manicurist Gina Edwards designed a different take on the staple French manicure: matte black tips!

The rounded nails were first painted using “Au Natural”, with the french tip painted with “Licorice”. “Matte About You” topcoat finished the look. Toes were painted with “Au Natural”.

Stylist Allen Wood for Bumble and Bumble continued to carry on with the 1960’s inspiration, styling hair into two looks: sleek ponytails, and pony’s with head scarves, made from scraps of Tanya’s fabric from the collection.

Tanya Taylor has definitely earned a place on my “designers to watch” list for her clever use of pattens, and updated take on classic pieces like skirts and blazers.

HONOR S/S 2013

HONOR SS13 113

HONOR’s Giovanna Randall is a breath of fresh air in the NY fashion world. Showing collections that would be equally at home on the runways of Paris, she continues to impress me with her talent, and growth as a (very!) new designer.

For Spring, the HONOR collection was inspired by nature, and human anatomy. Taking this interpretation literally, was Deborah Lippmann for Beauty.com.

“We created a gorgeous high-gloss white nail that was actually bone-inspired. We wanted a natural nail that still captured the essence of the collection, and came up with a killer combination.” –via Deborah Lippmann’s tumblr.

Jen Kao F/W 2012

JEN KAO F-W 2012 127

Backstage at Jen Kao’s FW ’12 show, Laurent Philippon for Bumble and Bumble created a unique, dip-dyed hair style that left me wanting to get more experimental with my own hair.

JEN KAO F-W 2012 05

Described as an “updated/softer goth look”, the style was edgy, while remaining pretty.

To get the look:
Hair was parted with a severe middle part. Bumble and Bumble Prep was sprayed on hair, then blown dry. Thickening Hairspray was then used to add volume and texture to hair. Dip-dyed extensions were added to the underside of models’ heads.

The look was finished with a spritz of Bumble and Bumble Shine Spray.

CND’s Candice Manacchio created a very dark, saturated manicure to compliment Kao’s FW12 “east meets west” collection.

To get the look:
Nails were painted with CND Oil Slick. Followed by two coat’s of CND Super Shiny.
