Today might have been the day of Michael Jackson’s funeral and memorial service in Los Angeles, but in his hometown of Gary, Indiana the atmosphere at his childhood residence was a bit more festive.
Crowds gathered to leave flowers and stuff animals, while Michael’s greatest hits played from a stereo across the street. Passerby’s danced and laughed together, celebrating the King of Pop’s life, and early times in Gary.
I’m so glad I drove the 20 minutes to Gary to witness this once in a lifetime event, and a part of history. Many of my own family members and friends grew up in Gary themselves. Some even saw Michael perform with The Jackson 5 in their early days! Love him or hate him he had a profound effect on music as we know it. RIP Michael!
