DELPOZO S/S 2016

DELPOZO- SPRING-SUMMER 2016 094

DELPOZO is a brand that almost seems as if it would be more suitable to show at Paris fashion week. Frequently referred to as “demi-couture”, the brand’s epic, handmade collections are the highlight of my every NYFW, and the perfect way to end the frenzy of each season.

DELPOZO- SPRING-SUMMER 2016 092

Backstage, the look was all about a fresh face topped off with glitter eyes, and ultra-long, sleek hair.

MAC lead makeup artist Monica Marmo described the look as having “skin super fresh like a flower, with metallic eyes for a little controversy.” This is “a woman from the future who is modern, but soft and beautiful.”

Moroccanoil Creative Director Antonio Corral Calero created a very long, easy hairdo, with a twist– literally! Hair featured a small, twisted ponytail in the center.

DELPOZO- SPRING-SUMMER 2016 022

To get the look:

Apply 22-24″ extensions, for hair that is not naturally long.
Starting with damp hair, apply Moroccanoil Treatment and Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to create the foundation of the style. Blow dry sleek and smooth.

DELPOZO- SPRING-SUMMER 2016 007

Once thoroughly dry, create a deep left side part. Gather 3″ sections at each side of the part and mist with hairspray. Comb sections back behind the ears and secure underneath the bulk of the hair at the nape of the neck with an elastic. This small ponytail should be hidden.
Flat iron all of the loose hair, gently rolling the iron from the mid-shaft to ends to create a natural bend.
Brush all of the loose hair smooth into a very low and loose ponytail – about mid-back – and secure with an elastic.
Use your finger to divide the ponytail in half above the elastic (creating a hole). Flip the ponytail up and through the hole to create the twisted style.
Set the style with a gentle mist of hairspray. — via Moroccanoil.

Finally, Julie Kandalec for ESSIE created an adorable, subtle glitter nail that perfectly complimented the eye makeup, using Sparkle On Top.

Two things I love the most about Delpozo collections: they always use interesting fabrics and materials, and play with volume. I can’t think of many other modern designers who have so much fun creating unique shapes and garments out of fabric.

TANYA TAYLOR FALL/WINTER 2015

TANYA TAYLOR Fall-Winter 2015 057

Tanya Taylor is the creator of some of my favorite prints and textures shown at NYFW. They are always ladylike, yet never boring. And each season I find myself wishing I could buy the majority of what she sends down the runway. I’m a big fan of dresses, and her dresses– well, they impress.

Along with creating great fabrics, Tanya also designs some wonderful complimentary accessories. Frequently including things such as bags, belts, and hair embellishments.

AMMERMAN SCHLÖSBERG FALL/WINTER 2015: BACKSTAGE

Ammerman Schlösberg Fall-Winter 2015- Backstage 011

I was only allowed backstage at the FW15 Ammerman Schlösberg show for a few brief moments. But that small window of time was enough for me to see that the shows hair and makeup were likely to be one of the most unusual beauty looks of the season.

Mark Carrasquillo and the SEPHORA PRO team created the look, which was inspired by the clothing collection’s “Furry Hospital” theme. Featuring pale skin, glittery smokey eyes, and on some models– fake blood.

The Blonds S/S 2012

The Blonds S-S 2012 139

I found it very fitting that one of the most theatrical and entertaining shows of NY Fashion Week took place on the last (for me) day. The Blonds’ shows are always a sight to see, as much a true spectacle as one can find during fashion week.

This season, I not only photographed the runway show, but ventured backstage as well. There, I found hair and nails just as show-stopping as the clothes.

The Blonds S-S 2012 59

CND nail tech Kristina Eastabrooks created a 20 sets of glamorous, sparkling nail tips for the show– that took over 100 hours to complete! The details on the nails, which featured materials like crushed geometric glass, 24k gold leafing, Swarovski crystals, and hand painted designs, were truly amazing:

The finished nails:

Dennis Lanni for Bumble and Bumble created “Jessica Rabbit”, curvy big hair that corresponded with the show’s classic 60’s heyday Playboy theme.

The Blonds S-S 2012 67

Dennis himself is a huge fan of 60’s era beauty, and it’s “big healthy hair”, but also insured the look didn’t veer too far into “pageant hair” territory.

To get the look:

Hair was sprayed down with Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray. A large barrel curling iron was then used to curl hair, which was then pinned on the top of the head to set.

The Blonds S-S 2012 14

Once pins are removed, hair was back-combed with a fine bristled (not nylon!) brush. Hair was finished with Spray de Mode for hold.

The Blonds Fall/Winter 2011

The Blonds Fall 2011 show definitely earned a place on my short list of “most memorable” shows of the season. I went in knowing to expect glitz and glamour, and even a few hijinks. By night’s end, the show, at Milk Studios, had met my expectations, and more.

After a short video intro, the show began with the appearance of two Chinese dragons hopping down the runway.

The two dragons “fought”, danced, and playfully pawed at the audience in the front row.

Celebrities like EVE, Aubrey O’Day, Miss J, and Jay Manuel, and Amanda Lepore laughed as the dragons entertained them.

And then, the models appeared:

The great thing about The Blonds is that while most of us probably will never wear anything like the amazing, theatrical costume-esque creations they send down the runway, once you see them in person, the desire is there. If I became a pop star tomorrow, would I want The Blonds to dress me? Definitely. All one needs is an incredibly special occasion to imagine themselves wearing such sparkling, imaginative clothing.

This show is fantasy dressing at it’s finest.

The Asian influenced collection referenced the theme in multiple ways, including chop sticks, fortune cookies, geisha girls, goddess statues, and of course, dragons. Every detail from the nail art, to the makeup, down to the impossibly bright, glittery shoes added to the look.

One of my favorites.
