SELF PORTRAIT F/W 2016

SELF PORTRAIT FALL-WINTER 2016 037

Self Portrait is one of the most exciting recent additions to the New York Fashion Week lineup. I’ve been a fan of the brand for a while now, after discovering them on ASOS.com, and I was thrilled to see they’d decided to start showing the new collections in NYC last year. Known for innovative mixes of lace with unconventional fabrics on dresses, the Fall collection included the addition of separates, turtlenecks, and bomber jackets. Backstage, Bumble and Bumble stylist Jimmy Paul developed a look that complimented the fresh faced makeup, with heavy, fringe-y clip in bangs– used to create “uniformity” amongst the models.

To get the look:  Apply Bb.Gel into hands and pull hair into a high ponytail and secure with elastic, creating a loop in the hair and allowing the rest of the ponytail to fall. For added shine, apply more Bb.Gel. Attach a clip-in bang and dampen with Prep. Each bang was razor cut to personalize the look to each model. – Via Bumble and Bumble

Gucci Westman for Tata Harper beautified models’ skin, creating a romantic, luminous, fresh faced look.

To get the look: Prep skin with Tata Harper Beautifying Face Oil, then use Reparative Moisturizer to achieve a radiant glow. Apply Restorative Eye Cream around the eyes to “refresh tired looking eyes”. Contour under cheekbones with a light bronzer, use nude lip gloss (with matching liner) to enhance lips, and apply matte brown eyeshadow to the top and bottom of eyes.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA SPRING/SUMMER 2015

Oscar de la Renta S-S 2015 NYFW 194

Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2015 offering was a magical, floral inspired collection. Of course, one always expects beauty at an Oscar show. But this season, I was even more blown away than usual.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA Fall/Winter 2014

OSCAR DE LA RENTA- Fall-Winter 2014 093

One of the shows I look forward to the most each season is Oscar de la Renta. I photograph a lot of shows, but every time I attend an ODLR show, I feel like I am truly witnessing something magical, rarely seen on the runways of New York Fashion Week.

As with the last few seasons, I arrived a few hours before the show to photograph the backstage preparations (and the show!) for the official Oscar PR Girl Pinterest page. Seeing how much care and detail goes into every aspect of the show is always pretty amazing. Not only are the clothes and models beautiful, but the little things like how the hair and makeup, accessories, styling, and even music all come together just blows my mind.

Below, some (ok, a lot!) of my favorite moments from show day:

OSCAR DE LA RENTA S/S 2014

Oscar de la Renta SS14 096

Every fashion week I over-commit myself, do too much, and wear myself down. But it’s soooo much fun, it’s worth the fact that I seem to get sick every.single.season. This time, luckily it didn’t happen until after NYFW ended. But it definitely kicked my butt. I’m finally feeling better, and ready to share some of my experiences and photos from my tenth season of NYFW!

What better to start with, than Oscar de la Renta?

I never feel like my words, or limited fashion vocabulary can truly do an Oscar show justice. But I’m happy to say the Spring/Summer ’14 collection once again blew me away. Oscar is a designer who creates clothing that nearly every type of woman could wear, regardless of age, or personal style. From ball gowns to suits, it’s all there! Including quite a few numbers I wish I owned myself.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA F/W 2013

Oscar de la Renta F-W 2013-118

The Fall 2013 Oscar de la Renta show was quite an…experience. Security was so tight, I fully expected Michelle Obama herself to be in the audience when I reached the show space at the brand’s Bryant Park showroom. It made for a stressful evening, to say the least. To be 100% honest: if every Oscar show was this intense, I’d probably stop photographing them. (Crazy security, no backstage access, + angry photographers = not my thing.) But in the end, it was worth it to see what happens when you mix two of the most talented fashion designers working today, to create one, inspiring new collaborative collection. And I feel privileged to have witnessed it first hand.

Oscar de la Renta S/S 2013

Oscar de la Renta SS13 Runway-90

Every day, I feel privileged to be able to do what I love for a living, but some days are just more magical than others. Whenever it’s time for an Oscar de la Renta show (which now happens around five times a year, for me!), I revert back to feeling like a little girl, surrounded by beautiful gowns and accessories. It has to be one of the closest things to feeling like a real live princess a New Yorker can experience!

I find I’m always more partial, in general, to spring and summer collections. Maybe it’s the brighter colors, or breezier fabrics. But this spring, Oscar totally blew me away. The impeccable styling, color choices, unexpected use of latex fabric, and even the rainbow hair was so fresh and inspiring in a world where so many designers seem to have lost their way.

Oscar de la Renta SS13 Backstage-2

I “live-pinned” the show for the brand over on the official OscarPRGirl Pinterest page. So my evening began a few hours pre-show, backstage:

At one point while navigating my way through the crowded backstage, I turned around and found myself unexpectedly blocking Oscar’s path. As I was about to excuse myself, he reached up, pet my dyed blue bangs, and said “I need your hair for the show!”.

Oscar de la Renta F-W 2012 1

The NY fashion week frenzy may have died down, but now the real excitement begins for me: sorting through all the photos I shot of the collections. Starting with Oscar de la Renta seemed to be a natural choice, with it being one of my favorite collections of the week, and including some of the prettiest photos I shot this season.

I’m always shocked at despite the fact that NYFW can be non-stop craziness, there is such a comforting sense of calm at Oscar. Even during the sometimes hectic backstage prep, models and crew were happy, with not an upset staffer, or single frown in site.

Gucci Westman for REVLON once again created a look that perfectly complimented the girliest collection I’ve seen from Oscar so far. Rosy pink cheeks and lips synced perfectly with the winter pastels, ballerina inspired dresses, and big teased “bobbed” hair style from Orlando Pita.

It’s easy to see why, of the five Oscar de la Renta shows I’ve photographed so far, this is my hands down favorite. (Followed closely by the Picasso inspired Resort 2012 collection.) I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Fun fact: after the show, we spotted Anna Wintour, who arranged for a personal fitting with Maria Sharapova trying on looks straight off the runway.
