Rekden Creative Consultant Guido is known for inventing some of the most edgy, trendsetting, and beautiful fashion week looks at fashion shows worldwide. Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs are just two of the major brands that regularly showcase his genius.
The Spring 2013 Louise Goldin show featured one of the most unusual hair styles of the week. Guido described the look as “manga/cartoony, slightly spooky” “Sleepy Hollow” inspired”, and “slightly gothic”.
“We’re always speaking so much about wearable styles, but we have to remember that fashion after all is also an art – and this look is all fantasy.I really saturated the hair in product, let it dry and then pulled out the left front section of the ponytail and pulled it across the face and eyes. I think of emerging branches, or like a mask of hair over the face that has a very haunted, ‘spinderly’, maybe even Tim Burton-esque feeling. These certainly are not sweet little girls.” -Guido, Redken Creative Consultant
Monique Lhuillier’s Spring 2013 collection was inspired by one of my favorite things: the ocean. Naturally, that led the beauty to be appropriately mermaid-esque, featuring one of my other favorite things: the color turquoise.
Val Garland for MAC Cosmetics created one of my top looks of the season– an aquatic inspired dramatic blue and gold eye. “Jerry Hall on holiday in Mustique” served as additional inspiration.
To get the look: Cover lid with Mac Chromacake in High Def Cyan. Follow with matching Electric Eel Eyeshadow, blending to outer edge of the eye. Brush Gold Metallic Pigment, mixed with Shine Mixing Medium onto corner of eyes. Apply Luxe Lipstick to lips. Finish with the application of Strobe Cream all over the body.
Val Garland’s additional suggestions to make it last all day/night: 1. Use a primer first. 2. Use eye pencil to color over lid, blending to the edges. 3. Powder over lid with translucent powder.
The finished look:
Kérastase’s Odile Gilbert also used the show’s aquatic theme to create a mermaid inspired look for hair. To get the look: Part hair in the center. Spray Double Force Controle Ultime Hair Spray from the center area of hair, to the tips. Next, crimp hair with a three-barrel curling iron to create waves. To achieve a “wet” finished look, apply Elixir Ultime liberally, topping the hair off with more Double Force Controle Ultime for hold.
I tend to say this every time I post about one of his collections, but Chris Benz is one of my absolute favorite young NYC designers. Not only is he one of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with, he continues to amaze me, season after season with his genius use of color, and unexpectedly whimsical “eccentric grandma” aesthetic of his clothing.
I really feel like years from now, Chris will reach a Marc Jacobs level of success and industry domination– fitting, since he once interned for the designer.
