THOM BROWNE F/W 2016

THOM BROWNE FALL-WINTER 2016 066

It should be pretty clear by now to anyone who reads this site occasionally, that Thom Browne is my favorite fashion designer currently showing in New York. More spectacle than traditional fashion show, his shows are my hands down favorite, can’t miss event of each season.

For Fall, the collection was inspired by “a walk in the park”– meaning Washington Square Park– circa one hundred years ago. Hair, usually styled more outlandishly season by season, was quite tame, allowing for the impeccable hats by Stephen Jones to shine instead. A vivid blue eyeshadow look brightened up the models’ pale faces.

According to Bumble and Bumble Lead Stylist Jimmy Paul, the hair style had a bit of a retro inspiration. “There’s a slight 1920s reference to the hair. Thom wanted the head as small as possible so we discussed ways to keep the hair close to the head. We’re essentially doing a wig wrap, the same way you’d prep the hair before putting on a wig. We’re going to make a headband with the hair and we’re using enough hairspray to make it look wet and actually stick.”

THOM BROWNE FALL-WINTER 2016 002

To get the hair look: Jimmy used a traditional wig wrap technique to get the hair as tight to the head as possible. Wrapping the hair from one ear around the head, the hair was wet down with Thickening Hairspray to give the hair hold.

To finish, Jimmy applied Bb.Gel for shine. –Instructions Via Bumble and Bumble.

Nails were painted in a pastel rainbow of colors. Lead manicurist Julie Kandalec, using ESSIE polish, created the look. The colors used (alternating on different models) were: Allure, Bikini so Teeny, Muchi Muchi, and Petal Pusher.

CHRIS BENZ S/S 2012

Since the very first time I saw photos of one of his collections back in 2009, I’ve been in love with Chris Benz.

Few designers do color and mix patterns and materials as well. His clothes are so colorful, viewing them is like injecting Crayola crayons directly into your veins.

His inspiration this season? “Andy Warhol’s superstars go to Coney Island, with a nod to candy kids.”

Fashion’s Night Out With Oscar de la Renta

Oscar de la Renta FNO: 21

When rumors of this year’s FNO events started swirling around, I wondered, what could I possibly do that would top spending the past two years of FNO with Gwen Stefani. Well tonight, I got my answer!

Thanks to the amazing ladies of Oscar de la Renta’s PR department, I got to spend Fashion’s Night Out watching Oscar himself, and a mariachi band sing to the crowd in his Madison Avenue boutique. The store was packed full of friends and admirers, but everyone was so happy and excited, it wasn’t as overwhelming as some FNO events can be.

Everyone was laughing, and cheering, and having fun. At one point, the crowd went wild. Assuming everyone was really excited for Oscar to begin singing again, I was shocked to look up and see Sarah Jessica Parker had made her way to the stage to be serenaded by Oscar.

After a few songs, both Sarah Jessica, and Oscar made lovely speeches, gushing over how much they admire each other. It was adorable, and almost made me a little teary eyed. When SJP was on her way out, I got to tell her the effect her speech had on me as she passed by, which she said was sweet.

Whatever these are, they were made with some of the best chocolate I’ve ever had in my life. And I don’t really even like chocolate!

Soon it was time for me to head home. I couldn’t believe it was just after 8pm– It’s been such a long day, it felt more like midnight. But it’s safe to say my FNO adventure might have been short, but it was definitely sweet. Like the past two years of FNO, I’ll be sure to remember tonight forever.

Fall/Winter 2011 NYFW at The Greyest Ghost

Well, it’s finally here! Over the next week, with the help of my awesome assistant photographer and old friend Maureen, The Greyest Ghost will be bringing you behind the scenes backstage, and runway shots from over 47 fashion shows. Posting–at least “in depth” posts– might be lite while we spend our days covering shows, and editing hundreds of images. And honestly, I’ll be resting as much as I can in my tiny bit of free time. Last season nearly killed me, and I’m still recovering from a bad bout of bronchitis, that’s left me with what feels like a lite case of asthma. (And really, everyone I know seems to have fallen ill right before FW started this season! The weather is horrible!) Despite our hectic schedules, we’ll be sure to share some sneak peeks every night, from each of the shows we’ve attend so far. You can also see some additional shots over at our tumblr.

While today was the first “official” day of NYFW, I got my start last night at Gary Graham’s presentation in Tribeca:

Gary is an expert in layering, and always manages to make a good impression. I can’t wait to share more photos with you! ❤

Vena Cava S/S 2011: Backstage

Vena Cava 10

My very first show of Spring 2011 NYFW (and the first show I’ve ever fully covered backstage!) was Vena Cava. Held at Milk Studios, on the morning of September 9th, the atmosphere backstage pre-show was buzzing with activity. Some shows teeter on the brink of chaos, and others seem to move at a languorously slow turtle’s pace. Thankfully, when I arrived backstage, preparations at Vena Cava were running smoothly and right on time.

Hair was styled by celebrity hair stylistTed Gibson and his salon team. I caught up with Ted as he was explaining this season’s hair inspiration, and the styling process to a group of fellow bloggers:

Vena Cava 102

For Vena Cava S/S ’11, Ted was inspired by 1970’s Halston woman he’s seen in an old issue of VOGUE. The idea was to take a classic bun style, and update it for more modern times by adding texture.

The result was a sleek, but also slightly messy ballerina-esque style, topped off with a half turban of raw silk.
Vena Cava 105

To get the look, Ted and his team started with his Build It Blowdrying Spray to add texture and volume. The hair was then blown dry, and flat ironed straight. Tame It Shine Lotion was used to fight frizz, and smooth hair down on the top of the head. Hair was then finger-combed back into a low ponytail.
Vena Cava 95

Next, the ponytail was teased to create even more volume:
Vena Cava 98

Multiple elastics were used every 1-2 inches down the length of the ponytail, to help achieve a more textured appearance:
Vena Cava 94

Hair was then twisted and pressed forward into a slightly messy bun:
Vena Cava 93

The look was finalized by the addition of the raw silk turban. Starting at the back, the scarf was wrapped around the head twice, with the ends secured underneath the bun with bobby pins.

The bun was then finished with Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hairspray.

The final look:

Along with Ted’s amazing hair skills, I also caught Mac’s makeup team in action:
Vena Cava 90

Christian McCullogh for MAC was inspired by Michelle Pfeiffer’s look in the movie “Scarface”. A blue eyeliner was drawn on the lid, with Midnight Blue shadow applied all over, with a dusting of Graphology over the top. Contrast shadow was used in the corners, and the lashes were coated with Haute & Naughty mascara. A matte orangy peach lip stick finished the look.

Every detail in Vena Cava’s S/S ’11 show was perfectly complimentary. The gorgeous silk dresses and the turbans, the reds of the lipstick, the sleek hair, and the chunky wooden jewelry that added texture. I thought the collection showed a maturity for the brand, while still holding on to their past signatures like geometric patterns, flashes of color, and impeccable silks.

Thanks to Ted and his amazing team for letting me be a part of the backstage experience. If any of you ever get a chance to work with the Vena Cava team, or Ted Gibson, take it. Everyone I worked with backstage was at the top of their game. And being around Ted, and his fun, easy going personality makes it impossible not to smile.

Happy New York Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week has Officially begun! It actually started Wednesday morning for me, with a few beauty press previews, and then my first show of the season that night. I’ve been waiting on a few more confirmations before I said anything, but I’m happy to announce I’ll be shooting a LOT of shows this season. Including some behind the scenes backstage action! I’m so excited to share everything with you all, and can’t wait to post about the cool stuff I get to see and do. Just know it might take a while for it all to appear here. I’m going to be busy pretty much from 10am-9 or 10pm every night. It’s hard when you want to go home and crash to sit at the computer and edit a couple thousand photos. Which is usually how many I end up with by the end of each day. I promise everyone there will be a ton of amazing photos and blog content to come, it might just take a bit of time to show up. And don’t worry, I’ll still be posting sneak peaks here and there.
