BANANA REPUBLIC F/W 2016: BACKSTAGE

BANANA REPUBLIC FALL-WINTER 2016- BACKSTAGE 028 Banana Republic’s Fall collection was inspired by French women, so it’s only natural the beauty look for the show would feature an exaggerated cat eye.

BANANA REPUBLIC FALL-WINTER 2016- BACKSTAGE 001

STILA’s Sarah Lucero created the look, dubbed “Camille”, that featured the aforementioned cat eye, feathery lashes, and two lip colors– a vibrant red, and a lighter pink nude.

Products used to get the look include: STILA Smudge Pot in black and brown, Eyes are the Window Shadow Palette in Mind, Stay ALl Day Waterproof Brow Color, HUGE Extreme Lash Mascara, and Color Balm Lipstick in Natasha, and Olivia.

Cutler Salon’s Brian Buenaventura used REDKEN products to develop two looks inspired by a Parisian girl who is “chic but doesn’t care too much”. Featuring a low ponytail, with a “wispy front”, or hair that was down and romantically curled.

BANANA REPUBLIC FALL-WINTER 2016- BACKSTAGE 023

To get the looks:

#1:

1. Prep the hair with Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam and blow dry section by section, giving the hair volume and texture.
2. Give the hair a left side part.
3. Take a 1 1/4″ curling iron and create an “S wave” by angling the iron vertically as you curl. Repeat throughout the hair.
4. Finish by placing hair forward on the right side, leaving loose pieces in front to give it an easy, effortless feel.
5. Complete the look with Redken Quick Dry 18 Instant Finishing Spray.

#2:

1. Prep the hair with Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam and blow dry section by section, giving the hair volume and texture.
2. Give the hair a perfect middle part, leaving loose hairs in front.
3. Gather the rest of the hair into a low ponytail.
4. Take a 6 inch black elastic cord and secure onto the hair. Allow the ends of the two elastic strands to fall and blend into the ponytail. – Via Cutler/Redken

THAKOON S/S 2014: Backstage

Thakoon S-S 2014- Backstage -021

Back in September, I was lucky enough to be able to visit backstage at Thakoon SS14, to cover the nail art for one of my beauty clients.

Morgan Taylor polishes provided the Parisian influenced nail art for the show.

Thakoon S-S 2014- Backstage -010

Thakoon’s inspiration was a young affluent parisian girl “adorned in pearls”, so to compliment that theme Morgan Taylor manicurists used 2 coats of Adorned in Diamonds, followed by a coat of Need for Speed Topcoat.

CALLA F/W 2013

CALLA Fall-Winter 2013 047

For the second season in a row, the CALLA collection won me over with its innovative use of floral prints, and adorable knits, this time in very “un-fall like” pastel shades.

CALLA Fall-Winter 2013 059

And just like the funky polka dot eye makeup accompanying the SS13 collection, for FW13, Mac Cosmetics’ Kabuki created a whimsical, geometric eye that perfectly complemented the collection.

Kate Spade F/W 2012: Backstage

KATE SPADE F-W 2012 64

Kate Spade’s f/w 2012 collection is the epitome of Parisian Chic. Cute without being overly saccharin, I found myself wanting to toss my mostly black wardrobe, and embrace all things girly and whimsical.

Backstage before the show, I caught up with Deborah Lippmann, who designed the show’s nail art in collaboration with show stylist Brad Goreski.

The very French-inspired nails were prepped by Deborah, 24hours before the show. Deborah Lippmann’s “Fade to Black” was painted on almond shaped nails, as a base color, after which a nail brush was used to dot on dabs of “I’m Not Innocent” to create the polka dot effect.

Stylists Creighton Bowman and Matthew Monzon for René Furterer used clip on bangs to create a graphic, mannequin like effect for the hair.

KATE SPADE F-W 2012 14

To get the look:
1. Hair was prepped with Naturia Dry Shampoo
2. Fioravanti Shine Enhancing No Rinse Detangling Spray was used to create shine, and smooth hair.
3. Hair was spritzed with Glossing Spray, then smoothed with a flat iron to create a glass-like effect.
4. Clip-on bangs, from Helena Collection, were applied to some models’ hair. (Bangs were trimmed before application, to look more natural.)
5. Vegetal Finishing Spray was used to create extra hold, and ensure the fake bangs stayed attached.
6. Finally, Myrrhea No Rinse Silkening Fluid was rubbed between the stylist’s palms and applied to the ends of hair.

I adored everything about the f/w collection. Once the models were prepped and the looks were complete, it was fun to see how each aspect of the look tied together. Case in point: a LOT of polka dots!

Ladurée Macarons…in NYC!

Laduree macarons, thanks to @jennlevine :)

Earlier this week, Ladurée opened their first US store in NYC. I’ve been wanting to try them for ages–I’ve never been to Paris, and am a huge macaron lover! Luckily, I talked them up so much, my roommate made a trip uptown to purchased a dozen, and bring a few home to share with me. You can read her review of the experience here.

Not only are the macarons beautiful (and one of my favorite inanimate objects to photograph), but they are delicious! To be honest, I wasn’t as fond of the fruity flavors (they filling reminded me of jam), but the cream filled macarons like Pistachio were amazing! Definitely worth a stop in the store to try them, and get a little taste of Paris here in NYC.

Gossip Girl is Back

NYC production might not start until Thursday July 8th, but Season 4 of Gossip Girl kicked off filming in Paris today. If the photos from today’s shoot are any indication, the show’s trendsetting fashion is back with a vengeance!

Leighton’s outfit is adorable, and while I personally wouldn’t have styled Blake’s cage dress over a lacy shift, I love it.

To be honest, I stopped watching last season after the plots kept getting more and more ridiculous. I’ll still be photographing the cast on set once filming starts in New York. Love or hate the show, you can’t deny they are one of the most fashionable casts currently on television. If the styling choices continue to push boundaries and inspire me like these looks do, I might just start watching again.

Givenchy Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2009

I am in love with Givenchy’s Fall ’09 Couture collection. I’ve always admired middle eastern and Persian traditional fashion–the jewelry, the beading, the gold. This season Riccardo Tisci showed more of his usual awe inspiring gowns, with an added focus on accessories such as saris, veils, chain maile, head pieces, and full arms of bangle bracelets.

Three of my favorite looks:

I can’t find any close up shots floating around the internet. But if you have a chance, check out the lace up heels and open toed boots. Don’t forget the rings and bracelets– some of which look like they could double as weapons!
