JEREMY SCOTT F/W 2016: BACKSTAGE

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 037

Backstage at Jeremy Scott — one of the most fun– and happy shows of fashion week, the mood was pure excitement. With as much careful consideration given to the beauty looks as the clothes, the big hair and bright makeup I found was definitely not disappointing. Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director Wella Professionals, created an over the top, “slightly Barbarella” inspired big hair look.

To get the look: “Eugene started by prepping the hair using EIMI Sugar Lift with EIMI Perfect Setting on the ends. Over-applying the product gave the hair a chemically processed texture, making it easier to style and giving it the fifties look that is synonymous with classic pin-up style. On creating the look, Eugene shares: ‘We blew the hair out at the roots with EIMI Sugar Lift to give us a great base for the backcombing. It makes the hair feel a little bit more porous and processed which is wonderful for keeping volume.'”

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 009

“Once the hair was dried using a large round brush, it was left to set in wide rollers before being brushed out.”

JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 024 “Eugene applied EIMI Stay Essential hairspray to hold the style and teased the hair to make it even bigger. At the end of the day, perfect pin-up hair was the finishing touch that brought together the Barbie-esque, decades-inspired ‘Cowboys and Poodles’ runway look.” -Instructions via WELLA Professionals

MAC Cosmetic’s Key Makeup Artist, Kabuki (one of my favorite makeup geniuses of NYFW!) created a “Cowgirls in Space” pin up inspired look to compliment the funky collection. “I wanted the look to feel fresh, and very Jeremy Scott”. Bright pink lips were the focal point of the look, with a swipe of custom mixed electric blue eyeliner to enhance the eye.

Last but not least, another one of my favorite backstage pro’s: Simcha Whitehill, AKA Miss Pop Nails, envisioned a stunning bright pastel nail look for each model. JEREMY SCOTT FALL-WINTER 2016 012

“To complement Jeremy Scott’s Spring 2016 collection, Miss Pop used a line up of our five best bright lacquer shades. She painted elongated oval nail tips in each of the five shades, then added a cartoon-like flare on the pinkies in Alpine Snow to give the nails a shiny plastic look.” – Via OPI

Colors used include: Shorts Story, A Good Mandarin is Hard to Find, The Sun Never Sets, I just can’t Cope-Acabana, and To Infinity and Blue-yond. “One coat of one of each of those shades and then one coat of Kyoto pearl to get this muted metallic bright.” – Via Miss Pop

BETSEY JOHNSON S/S 2016: BACKSTAGE

BETSEY JOHNSON- SPRING-SUMMER 2016 111

I had no idea when I arrived backstage at Betsey Johnson’s Spring 2016 show that it would be her last. After 50 years in the industry, Betsey has retired from showing at NYFW!

Betsey’s shows were always guaranteed to be a highlight of fashion week, a bright spot in the sometimes dreary and over-serious show calendar. From her cartwheels, to her vibrant collections, to her over the top beauty looks backstage, her shows definitely won the award for “most fun”.

Danielle Candido for Morgan Taylor Lacquer created three incredibly looks to compliment the themes, AKA decades of the SS16 collection.

First, there was a sparkly red manicure, akin to Dorothy’s ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz.

To get the look:
Apply one coat of Pretty Woman, followed by one coat of New York State of Mind glitter polish. Complete the nail by using 2 coats of glitter shade Rare as Rubies, and finish with Make it Last topcoat.

Look two was a “graphic mod” nail, in black and white.

To get the look:
Use one coat of All White Now. Using a nail brush, paint on various sized lines using Little Black Dress, and Could Have Foiled Me.

JEREMY SCOTT SPRING/SUMMER 2016: BACKSTAGE

Untitled

Backstage at a Jeremy Scott show is usually one of the most colorful, fun, and lively environments one can possibly encounter during New York Fashion Week.

I always enjoy shows with more theatrical themes, that carry over not just in the collection, but to the beauty looks, and production as well. So this show was my own idea of thematic heaven! For Spring/Summer 2016, Jeremy Scott was inspired by John Waters, specifically the movie crybaby. If you haven’t ever seen it–please watch it asap and prepare to be inspired by the amazing beauty and fashion, and maybe fall in love with Johnny Depp a little bit.

To achieve that “Crybaby” look, big, bold hair is essential. WELLA’s Eugene Souleiman delivered, in the form of giant wigs, teased and backcombed to achieve the highest volume possible, then curled.

HONOR S/S 2015

HONOR S-S 2015 NYFW 063

HONOR is one of those special NYC based brands that I’ve been following almost since their inception. Back in 2011, I shot their second show ever, and fell in love with their unique mix of whimsy, and retro sensibility.

HONOR S-S 2015 NYFW 003
Such a fun fabric!

Each season, they create and incredibly detailed inspiration story behind the collection. For Spring, the story was as follows:

“A beautiful debutante falls in love with a George Harrison-type bad boy. They go on a physical and spiritual “trip” together. She finally realizes she has fallen for a bad person and begins to untangle herself from him. She is stronger for her experience.”

For the beauty look, this translated into a relaxed low ponytail, bold blue winged eyeshadow, and a fun blue and pearl nail.

Jazz Age Lawn Party: Summer 2014

Jazz Age Lawn Party - Summer 2014 033

The Jazz Age Lawn Party, held two weekends a year on NYC’s Governor’s Island, is my hands down favorite “Summer in New York” event to attend. This year, for the first time, I went in both June and August.

I still had a blast, but my first visit in June was very hot, and the event seemed weirdly overcrowded (a first in the many years I’ve been attending). Yesterday’s event was much more laid back, and the weather was pleasant– making it even easier to run around and capture so many amazingly dressed guests in all of their finery. With a few breaks to sip champagne and picnic with friends of course.

Needless to say, if you ever have the chance to attend— GO. This is one of those words cannot do it justice type of gatherings. So I’ll just let the images do all the talking from here.

Jazz Age Lawn Party 2012

Jazz Age Lawn Party 2012 153

One of my favorite bi-annual NYC events happened last weekend— The Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island!

I harass my friends about going every year. They always debate whether or not it’s really as awesome as I make it sound…and then they see my photos, and regret not going! Never fear though: if you missed it, it happens again in August.

Jazz Age Lawn Party 2012 157

For this year’s June weekend of festivities, I attended the party on Saturday. A first, and honestly, not something I’m sure I’d do again. The past two years, I’ve gone on Sunday, which always seems to be more lively, and full of more dressed up, dedicated party-goers.

Jazz Age Lawn Party 2012 140

Either way, it was still fun, drinking in the sun, taking photos, and making some new friends. I don’t, however, recommend attending after you’ve had a late night out with friends. I was a bit late heading out, and only caught the last 2 hours of the event. (I won’t make that mistake again!)

The 2011 Jazz Age Lawn Party

2011 Jazz Age Lawn Party- (4)

The Jazz Age Lawn Party, held bi-annually on Governor’s Island, is my hands down favorite NYC event of the summer. I first fell in love with the party last August.

There’s nothing like spending the day on Governor’s Island, enjoying old time-y dancing, picnic lunches, tasty drinks, and amazing jazz age inspired fashion. The street style at the Jazz Age party cannot be beat! Sadly, I’ll be missing the August event this year. But I did manage to make it over to the party this past Sunday. With the help of the new East River Ferry, my journey was cut in half! I’d definitely recommend using that as your mode of transport if you’re based in Brooklyn, like I am.

This summer, the event was bigger than ever! I made so many wonderful new friends. If I took your picture, say hi! The photos really speak for themselves, so I’ll cut this short, and get on to the good stuff. 😉

As soon as we encountered the line to get in, we already ran into some amazing fashion.
