What Happens When a Supermodel Violates Your Copyright

This post is something I’ve struggled with for months, and debated even writing. But it’s time to share my story, and explain why I’ve been absent.

Basically, the short version is Karlie Kloss improperly used one of my images. It showed up on her instagram account last September, without credit. (Point of reference: many of the images before and after mine are credited.)

As readers of my blog will know, I shoot as a house photographer for Oscar de la Renta’s social media accounts and Pinterest page. On September 10, 2013 I took this photo of Karlie Kloss taking a “selfie” backstage at the SS14 Oscar de la Renta show:

Oscar de la Renta SS14 075
No other photographers were in the makeup area at the time, guaranteeing this was an exclusive shot.

When I got home, I posted it as part of my daily “sneak peek” show recap.

The next night, backstage at the Anna Sui show, I approached Karlie and showed her the image on my phone. She seemed very excited, and mentioned how much she loved it. When she asked where she could find it, I gave her my business card with my blog’s address.

A few days later, Karlie instagrammed the image, leaving out a photo credit.

Not knowing any other way to get in touch with her, I commented on Karlie’s instagram hoping she’d see it in the sea of many many other comments. After a few days, she did, writing me an apology for not crediting me initially.

Karlie instagram apology

By that time, 14,000 people had liked the image. That’s 14,000 people who would have seen my name attached to it.

Editorial Outtakes: Preetma

Preetma2

While browsing files on my external hard drive last week, I came across these shots of Preetma Singh, from a Spring editorial I shot for a client– that was never published. They’re too beautiful not to share with the rest of the world, so I’m posting some of the outtakes here.

Preetma4
The shoot (about a girl getting ready for a night on the town) took place in the Warren Tricomi salon, on Manhattan’s UES.

Preetma3
One of my favorite shots. I love this multi-watch look!

Not only is Preetma beautiful, but she’s also amazingly intelligent, and kind!
An attorney who now works at VOGUE, you can catch her inspiring outfit posts, and life adventures on her blog Working Girl, Esq. Seriously–her blog is one of the few style blogs I still read on a regular basis. She’s right up there with Susie Bubble on my list of style bloggers who actually stimulate my creativity and make me want to dress better, and is one of my favorite street style subjects to capture at NYFW.

Spring 2011 Fashion and Editorial Internships

I’ve been taking it easy and focusing a bit more on my personal life since fracturing my foot late last month. But I’ve managed to find a bunch of awesome spring internship opportunities to share with you. As I always say, for anyone trying to break into the fashion or publishing industries, interning is THE BEST way. Do as many as you can, as early as you can! I got my start in the magazine industry by doing an internship, and got a freelance editing job about a month after it ended.

Don’t forget to follow the application instructions. : )

Karen Elson Live at Le Poisson Rouge

Karen Elson 19

Last night I braved the torrential rain storm to see model and musician Karen Elson’s first NYC show at Le Poisson Rouge. Karen’s first solo show just took place this past week at SXSW in Austin, so I feel extraordinarily lucky I was able to catch her sold out debut performance in New York City.

Le Poisson Rouge was the perfect venue for the occasion. Small and intimate, but still arranged in a way that all guests can comfortably watch the show. I arrived early enough to snag a front row seat (at a table with a handful of strangers). I was especially glad I was early after watching dozens of guests, including a few people I recognized like Liz from White Lightning, and Mr. Mickey from PAPER Magazine arrive too late to find seating. Not with out seats: Grace Coddington with beau Didier Malige, and half a dozen other VOGUE staffers with front row center seats reserved just for them, there to support their friend.

Total side note, but Grace, who was sitting about 10 feet directly in front of me, kept making eye contact with me. (Which made me totally giddy.) At one point, she was  right behind me talking to a friend. Grace remarked how skinny her friend looked, to which the woman replied “no fat, no dairy, no sugar.” Grace immediately responded with “fat, dairy, sugar” while patting her stomach. Just another reason I love this amazing woman.

Once the show started, I had the perfect vantage point for both watching, and taking photos.

Karen Elson 4

Karen Elson 5

Not surprisingly, Karen seemed a wee bit nervous on stage. But once she began to sing, all signs of nerves disappeared. And boy, the woman can sing! Sounding like the lovechild of Patsy Cline and a modern singer like Jenny Lewis, Karen belted out over a dozen songs for a completely enthralled audience. Even more beautiful in person, Karen also possesses one of the cutest speaking voices I’ve ever heard–a sweet sounding British accent watered down with a bit of American twang. But her voice isn’t her only gift: she’s an extremely talented songwriter with a penchant for great “story telling” songs reminiscent of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Simon and Garfunkle.

Karen Elson 1

Karen Elson 20

The set list was as follows:

Pretty Babies
Truth
Stolen Roses
Cruel Summer
Lunasa
100 Years
Garden
Thief
Birds
Last Laugh
Mouths to Feed

ENCORE:
Milk & Honey
The Ghost Who Walks

I ended up filming the final song of the night:
(FYI it’s HD so it won’t be fully processed until a few hours from now.)

Karen Elson 16

Karen Elson,The Greyest Ghost
Karen’s debut album, is set to be released May 25th by Third Man/XL Records. For more info check out her web site. If you sign up for the mailing list, you receive a free mp3 of “The Ghost Who Walks”! No word yet on when Karen will be back in NYC, but I’ll be anxiously awaiting another chance to see her live!

Grace Coddington: Catwalk Cats Signing

Grace Coddington 5

Last night after hitting up the Studio Beauty Mix party at Korres (more on that later!) I stopped by Clic Gallery in Little Italy for the Grace Coddington book signing. She was at the gallery to autograph copies of her book Catwalk Cats, and meet her fans. For those somehow still unfamiliar with Grace, she is the Creative Director and a Senior Stylist at VOGUE. She is considered one of the (If not THE) most influential and well respected stylists in the business.

Grace Coddington: Mirror Image
Grace meets the Grace T-Shirt.

When we arrived shortly after 7pm only about ten people were there, along with Grace who was standing at a desk surrounded by her books! (When I’d called to preorder my book, I’d been warned to arrive early that they were expecting a large turn out. It did get very crowded–everyone arrived late!) My friend Jenn and I got in line, and waited patiently for our turn to meet Grace. Grace is a pretty amazing site in person. Her massive red hair billows around her face like some kind of Arthurian princess.

Grace Coddington 2

Once it was our turn to meet Grace, I handed her my book to be signed. Then asked if Jenn and I could pose for photos with her.

Rachel & Grace
Me & Grace.

Jenn & Grace
Two Redheads! Jenn & Grace.

Other than “thank you”, telling her my name, and smiling a lot I don’t think I said a word to her. Over the last ten or so years I’ve met dozens of celebrities: actors and actresses, writers, musicians. But never someone so influential in my field of work. And I had no clue what to say to her. I wanted to tell her how much she made me laugh in “The September Issue”, how amazing I think all of her editorials are, and how her humor and personality reminds me of my late Grandmother. But I choked!
