RODARTE SPRING/SUMMER 2019

Rodarte Spring-Summer 2019 047

Last September, one of my long term fashion week goals was finally achieved: I was able to photograph backstage at the Rodarte Spring 2019 show. And it was just as gorgeous as I always dreamed it would be!!

Rodarte Spring-Summer 2019 004

Morgan Taylor Lead Artist Eichi Matsunaga created an Art Deco inspired nail in metallic colors with crystal accents.

Rodarte Spring-Summer 2019 017

To get the look: Polish colors including “Give Me Gold”, “Could Have Foiled Me”, and “No Way Rosé” were used, then topped off with 3 tiny rainbow colored crystals glued to each of the nails.

Odile Gilbert for TRESemmé created one of the most gorgeous hairdo’s I’ve seen in all my years of covering fashion week. The stunning, rose filled romantic hair completely stunned everyone who saw it.

Rodarte Spring-Summer 2019 070

Rodarte Spring-Summer 2019 062

To get the look: stylists used the brand’s Sultra After Hours 1-inch and 1.5-inch Clipless Curling Wands. Hair was curled by alternating twisting hair towards and away from the face for a natural, loosely waved look. Tresemmé Fresh & Clean Dry Shampoo was used to add body, then finished off with Tresemmé Two Extra Hold Hair Spray to keep hair in place. To complete the look, hair was accented with fresh roses in varying colors and sizes, secured with hair wraps and bobby pins. Each of the 48 models had a custom selection of roses, by floral artist Joseph Free! The models were then paired with veils, bows, or metal hair accessories in bird or crown varieties.

James Kaliardos for NARS created bright, vibrant looks in 3 different eyeshadow shades, which varied amongst the models.

Rodarte Spring-Summer 2019 020

To get the look: lids were prepped with NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base. Eyes were then accented with NARS eyeshadows in Douro (yellow), Baby Jane (teal blue), and Domination (hot pink) in a rectangular design. Which was made extra vibrant by pressing the pigment onto the lids with a medium-sized shadow brush. To complete the look, NARS red-orange lipstick shade Powermatte Lip Pigment in “Don’t Stop” was applied to the lips of every model.

JONATHAN SIMKHAI S/S 2019

Jonathan Simkhai Spring 2019

For Spring 2019, Jonathan Simkhai went back to his roots, in the form of an intimate presentation, vs. a runway show. As one of my favorite homegrown NYC (now LA!) designers, I’ve been following his career since I attended his very first show. So it’s amazing to see how far he’s come, and how his design work has grown.

Backstage, things were as beautiful as ever. Grace Lee for Maybelline NY created a fresh faced look, with a focus on wine stained lips.

Jonathan Simkhai Spring 2019

To get the look, Lee applied Composer to the center of model’s lips, then quickly used BabyLips to smudge and blend it outward, before the matte lipstick dried.

Jonathan Simkhai Spring 2019

Odile Gilbert for TRESemmé created a 1960’s inspired look with sleek, straight hair, accented by 2 small braids (one on each side). To complete the style, the ends of the braids were finished off with small wooden beads.

Jonathan Simkhai Spring 2019

The step by step to get the look: Start by washing hair with TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner to create a frizz-free foundation. Part hair in the centre. Spray TRESemmé Repair & Protect Pre-Styling Spray to prevent damage and then blow dry hair with a paddle brush. Use hair straighteners to achieve a sleek and smooth finish. Spray generously with TRESemme Dry Shampoo for texture. Then, take a small section of hair from either side, tightly plait and fasten with a hair tie. Add wooden beads for additional 60’s-style chic. Finish the look with TRES TWO Micro Mist Hair Spray to keep the look in place without creating stiffness.

For the final beauty touch, Côte toxin free nail polish was used to accentuate model’s nails in a nice, soft neutral shade.

The collection featured softer looks, and represented a departure form-fitting gowns Simkhai is known for. While it might represent a change– it was a welcome one. The collection was beautiful, hippie dreamware any woman would want to own.

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of documenting behind the scenes at the look book photo shoot for Katie Gallagher’s Fall/Winter 2018 collection “True Red”.

One of my favorite local designers, and someone I’ve been covering since my first ever season of NYFW, Katie’s designs continue to evolve and impress me more each season.

CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING/SUMMER 2018: BACKSTAGE

CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING-SUMMER 2018 060

Years ago, I photographed one of Carolina Herrera’s Bridal Fashion Week shows for BRIDES Magazine. And it was one of the most elegant shows I’ve ever attended. The Spring 2018 show was no different.

CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING-SUMMER 2018 035

Held in the Met Museum (the first time a fashion show has been allowed to take place inside!), the show was gorgeous and magical in a way I haven’t experienced since the final show by the late and great Oscar de la Renta.

Backstage, Morgan Taylor Lead Artist Gina Edwards designed the nail art look, which consisted of an elegant “cloud-like white” nail, created using “Heaven Sent” nail lacquer.

The finished look:
CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING-SUMMER 2018 005

CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING-SUMMER 2018 013

Makeup wise, MAC Cosmetics provided the beauty look, which focused on fresh smooth skin, and a kohl-rimmed eye.

To get the look:

CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING-SUMMER 2018 002

Finishing things off, beauty wise, TRESemmé NYFW Stylist Odile Gilbert presented a “sleek is chic” smooth, straight hair look.

CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING-SUMMER 2018 010

CAROLINA HERRERA SPRING-SUMMER 2018 018

To get the hair look:
Start by washing hair with TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner. Generously spray TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protect Spray to damp hair, and apply TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Mousse to the roots (before blow drying!). Create a clean center part and blow-dry, use a curling iron to soften the ends and create subtle curve. Take the section of hair (before the ear) on each side and secure underneath the remaining hair with an elastic band at the nape of the neck. To finish, secure the look with TRESemmé TRES Two Freeze Hold Hair Spray for a neat and even consistency.

THOM BROWNE S/S 2017

THOM BROWNE SPRING-SUMMER 2017 022 Thom Browne’s shows never cease to blow my mind. Season after season, they just keep getting better, more theatrical, and even more innovative than ever. The gorgeous clothing is so consistently fabulous, so photogenic, that I feel privileged seeing its runway debut, and end up still thinking about it years later.

For Spring, the show took place in a colorful tiled set, which led VOGUE to liken it to a ‘Stepford Wives’ pool party’. A description I found quite accurate.  Upon entering the venue, photographers were given white Thom Browne lab coat-style jackets to wear, to further the immaculate illusion.

Backstage, the beauty look focused on big bombshell hair, “fake” tans, and multi-colored pastel lips and nails.

THOM BROWNE SPRING-SUMMER 2017 006

Sil Bruinsma for MAC used MAC’s Pro Longwear Foundation in NC42 to create the orange, fake tan look on models faces. Models got pastel blue, or green lips, depending on skin tone. Liberal layers of mascara were applied to lashes to create a smudged look. With the makeup being finished off with a line of white acrylic paint looping around models’ necks to show a clear line between their fake tanned faces, and untanned bodies.

THOM BROWNE SPRING-SUMMER 2017 002

Bumble and Bumble’s Jimmy Paul created a voluminous retro influenced hairdo to complement the collections old school pool party vibe. (After the hair was curled and set, large floral swim caps were placed on model’s heads until the show.)

TO GET THE LOOK: 1. Apply bumble and bumble Prep. Spray thickening hairspray and Surf spray throughout. 2. Pin into a curling iron set. 3. Once hair is set, let down and brush out curls. 4. Backcomb hair to add volume and lift at the roots. 5. Keep the look in place with Strong Finish. – Via Bumble and Bumble.
